At the 2026 Scouting America National Scout Jamboree, Rotary District 7730 presented the Cliff Dochterman Award to Dr. Mike Matzinger for his outstanding service to Scouting America and the Rotary Club of The Friendship Knot.
Named for a past Rotary International president and Eagle Scout, the Cliff Dochterman Award honors Rotarians for distinguished service to Scouting.
For his Eagle Scout service project, 16-year-old Jacob Delveaux of Troop 600 (Oak Ridge, NC) designed and built freestanding dryers for firefighters’ bunker gear and donated two of them to the Greensboro Fire Department.
Turnout coats can be washed, but a regular commercial dryer damages them, so wet gear can take 12 to 24 hours to air-dry. Jacob’s dryer pushes air through the gear and has valves so firefighters can switch on only the spots they are using, whether that is one coat or several. It dries a full coat in about two hours. Each machine cost about $1,000 in materials, a small fraction of what a commercially made gear dryer would cost.
Fast drying matters because firefighters keep a second set of gear ready for the next call, and each set costs thousands of dollars. Jacob is also sharing his plans with the department so it can build more dryers for its 27 fire stations across Greensboro.

Stewart Chipman, an Eagle Scout with Troop 600 (Oak Ridge, NC), earned the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement, one of Scouting’s highest outdoor honors. Only a small number of Scouts nationwide receive it.
Stewart worked toward the medal for three years. Along the way, he earned National Outdoor Achievement Award segments in camping, aquatics, hiking, and conservation; became a Leave No Trace Trainer; and earned his Wilderness First Aid certification. He has camped more than 125 nights and hiked over 200 miles, including treks at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and his aquatics training includes lifeguarding, SCUBA diving at the Florida Sea Base, and mile swim.
Stewart has also given back as a leader. He has served Troop 600 as Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and now Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, worked on the aquatics staff at Camp Cherokee, and is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. His Eagle project, a flag collection and retirement center at Oak Ridge Town Park, won the Old North State Council’s 2020 Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award.

The Old North State Council presented the medal at its Volunteer Recognition Banquet on March 16, 2023, in Greensboro.
